ChatGPT most popular AI tool with 14.6 billion visits in one year, beats Google Bard, Firefly & Midjourney
ChatGPT has become the undisputed winner in terms of popularity among AI chatbots over the last 12 months. According to a new study, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI has absolutely dominated its competitors, attracting a whopping 14.6 billion total visits between September 2022 and August 2023. To put the success of ChatGPT into perspective, this figure represents 60% of the total traffic generated by the top 50 AI tools during this period. With an average of 1.5 billion visits per month, ChatGPT recorded more traffic than its closest competitors combined.
Character AI – the website where users can chat with a variety of AI chatbots with different personalities – was a distant second with 3.8 billion total visits over the course of the year. While this figure is certainly impressive, it pales in comparison to ChatGPT’s almost 15 billion visits. However, an earlier study had found that Character AI actually had higher engagement, with visitors spending almost eight times as much time on the platform as ChatGPT.
Other major industry players such as Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing Chat have not come close to keeping up in the last 12 months. Google Bard, which was launched at the beginning of the year, reached 241 million visits, putting it in 6th place, while Microsoft’s Bing Chat was absent from the top 10 list.
The gap between ChatGPT and the rest of the industry is likely to widen in the future. The analysis found that the AI industry as a whole has grown 10.7 times year-on-year, driven by the viral popularity of ChatGPT.

Aside from the dominance of ChatGPT, the fact is that AI tools are seeing a steady stream of traffic, with average monthly visits rising from just 241 million in September 2022 to over 4 billion at their peak in May 2023. Unsurprisingly, the top 50 AI tools saw a combined 24 billion visits from September 2022 to August 2023.
But not all AI tools are experiencing growth. Craiyon, Midjourney and Quillbot saw a significant drop in their traffic over the same period, although they continue to hold high rankings in terms of traffic.
